Summary

What I feel throughout SEA Teacher program

About my teaching experiences

In teaching experiences, I felt some difficulties which were generated by the difference between Indonesia and Japan.
Firstly, some mathematical symbols were different. For example, the expression of division was different between Japan and Indonesia. In that case, I was sometimes confused whether students‘ expression in their answer was correct.
Second, time schedule of school is totally different from Japan. In Japan, each period is 45 or 50 minutes and there is a break time with 10 minutes between each period. However, in Indonesia, there are only 2 break times in one day and students need to stay in Mathematics class continuously for 105 minutes at maximum. This long time makes some students tired and actually, some of them can’t concentrate on their studying. It was difficult for me to motivate tired students to concentrate on studying Mathematics.
Although there were some difficulties, in conclusion, I taught each topic almost correctly to students. I accept there were some points I can improve like exercises’ accuracy or clearness of explanation but overall, I succeeded to teach them correctly. Teaching Mathematics was absolutely meaningful experience for me. Throughout the teaching experiences, I could understand how each students think and act differently and it broadened my horizons.

About Indonesia

What I want to say at first is Indonesia is a wonderful country. Indonesian people were very kind, for example, when I asked something to local people, they answered kindly.
I also feel that the Indonesian culture is interesting. Indonesia consist of several islands and each island has its own culture. That means Indonesia has several cultures in this one country. All culture are different from Japanese one so experiencing each culture was enjoyable for me. This is what I cannot undergo in Japan and experiences in Indonesia help me a lot to understand other culture.
I also learned different culture from other student teachers who participated to STA Teacher program from the Philippines and Thailand. In my free time, I talked with them and deepened my understanding about the Philippines and Thailand.
SEA Teacher program gave me not only teaching experiences but also opportunities to communicate to people from other countries and understand their culture. This is definitely important for me and I think experiences with SEA Teacher program will help me a lot in my life.

Finally, I appreciate all students in junior high school, my teacher Ms. Maya, buddies who helped me to live comfortably in Indonesia, other student teachers, my supervisors in Japan and all people who helped me in SEA Teacher program.
